Currently,
President of the Fauquier County Chamber of Commerce, Karen Henderson is
also a well-known broadcaster, vocalist and speaker whose entertainment
career spans over three decades.
Classically trained in opera, and an avid aficionado of jazz standards
and philosophy, the eclectic Karen Henderson was heard as an overnight
voice on Washington D.C. Radio station WMAL for over 12 years during
the 1980’s through 1992. As an air personality, Karen interviewed some
greats from the world of business and entertainment, including Art
Linkletter and George Shearing. She annually hosted the July 4th show
on the Washington Monument Grounds, and the National Zoo’s Sunset
Serenade Concert Series. As a vocalist, she performed 12 Christmas Eve
concerts at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, broadcast live
simultaneously over WMAL and Armed Forces Radio. She appeared numerous
times at RFK stadium for the Washington Redskins; and in concert with
notable bands that include the Army Blues, Airmen of Note, Air Force
Symphony, the Starlight Orchestra and the U.S. Navy Commodores. Her
appearances with the Commodores became so popular and numerous that she
was ultimately named an Honorary Lifetime Member of the U.S. Navy
Band, an honor awarded only to an exclusive number of outstanding
professional American musicians. She appeared in numerous elegant
nightclub and hotel venues, and for eight years at the exclusive Ft.
Myer Officers Club. And from 1986-1991, she was known as the
“Morning Voice of Culpeper Radio”, appearing on WCVA in morning drive
for five years. She is also a founding member of ISES (International
Society of Event Specialists).
Her recent engagements include the National Space Club, the Wright
Brothers Awards Dinner (29th year), and the prestigious Air
and Space Museum at the Smithsonian Institution. As a “living fossil”
among Washington D.C. notables, Karen performed for Bob Hope’s 95th
birthday party at the Library of Congress (replacing Tony Bennett when
Frank Sinatra passed away), and appears several times a year for the
royal gatherings held by His Royal Highness Prince Bandar, Ambassador to
the United States from Saudi Arabia. Karen performed for the Wright
Brothers 100th Anniversary of Flight for the Aero Club of
Washington at National Airport, and hosted and performed at the John F.
Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on the Millennium Stage on New
Year’s Eve to ring in 2004 and 2005. Karen recently appeared at the
Mellon Auditorium and performed for an exclusive WWII Reunion celebrated
by the WWII Memorial Committee. In March, 2005, she made her 29th
annual appearance on behalf of the NASA Goddard Space Center at the
Washington Hilton. Karen also made Washington music history as the
first-ever vocalist to appear at the famed Corcoran Art Gallery Jazz
Concert Series. She appeared there again in November,
2005. She performed at the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage on New
Year’s Eve, 2006, and continues to sing at other venerable venues.
